Chapter 3

What a Route Is

A route defines how data moves from one endpoint to another through one or more processing steps. In Camel, routes are the main unit of integration behavior. They describe flow, not only code execution.

Chapter 3

What an Endpoint Is

An endpoint is a source or destination identified by a URI-like syntax. Examples include files, HTTP services, JMS queues, Kafka topics, timers, direct internal calls, and mock endpoints for testing.

file:input
http://example.com/api
jms:queue:orders
direct:validateOrder
Chapter 3

Exchange and Message

An Exchange represents one unit of work flowing through a route. It contains the message body, headers, properties, and processing context. Understanding the Exchange is crucial because many Camel decisions, transformations, and error behaviors operate on it directly.

Chapter 3

Why These Concepts Matter

Advanced Camel work becomes much easier once you understand that routes connect endpoints, exchanges carry data, and processors or EIPs modify flow. Without that model, Camel can feel magical and confusing. With it, the framework becomes predictable.
