Chapter 9

What Batch Processing Means

Batch processing means executing programs over groups of records or business events, often on a scheduled basis such as nightly, weekly, monthly, or quarter-end runs. This is fundamental in finance, payroll, settlement, and regulatory reporting.

Chapter 9

Job Flows and Multi-Step Processing

In enterprise environments, one COBOL program may clean or validate data, another may sort it, another may calculate results, and another may generate reports or downstream files. Real operations often involve coordinated chains of jobs rather than one isolated executable.

Chapter 9

Sorting and Merging

Sorting records by account, department, date, or transaction code is common before aggregation or report generation. This ensures grouped outputs and summary calculations are correct.

Chapter 9

Report-Like Output

COBOL systems often generate reports, summaries, audit files, and reconciliation outputs rather than only interactive screens. Understanding output design and totals logic is therefore important.

Chapter 9

Real Example

A payroll cycle may collect raw attendance and employee files, sort them by department, calculate pay, generate bank-transfer outputs, and produce management reports. This kind of multi-step batch flow is classic COBOL territory.
